So here we are… The Chapter about Christianity.. But TBH why the heck am I doing this?
Right..., so the Muslim Dude won’t one up me.
Christian Contraction in Asia and Africa
Ok… So while the last Unit focused a lot on Islam, We’re going to discuss about the religion that spread throughout the Middle East, Europe, and Asia, but unfortunately died out(lol wait..) Except in Europe.. and parts of Asia, and even the Middle East
A demonstration of how we can all live in peace regardless of religious beliefs:
AND CHRISTIANITY IS THE LARGEST RELIGION IN THE WORLD WITH 2.2 BILLION PEOPLE IN THE WORLD SUCK IT MUSLIM DUDE. - CHRISTIAN DUDE
You may be the largest, but you have so many sects that there’s a Wikipedia article on it. Muslims have Sunnis and Shias and that makes up 1.6 billion people.-Muslim Dude
PSH they’re all pretty much the same thing...And at least we don’t fight over who’s the ruler, 400 million is the only people that might diverge a little but it’s the same thing...-Christian Dude
True. You just split from the mainland, make your own church, and make yourself the leader. Wait, that’s worse. Also, the Mormons believe that the moon is inhabited by 6 foot tall Quakers who live to be 1000. And pretty much our only difference is who our leader should be. Y’all’s differences include the Pope, traditions, salvation, secularism, the Bibles and a whole lot more.- Muslim Dude
(As a Christian Dude, I disown the Mormons (I don’t really count you guys as Christians, But that’s just me… Sry but you guys are creepy lol JK) The main thing about christianity is that we believe that Jesus Christ is our savior…(We also believe that Jesus is God, Read up about the Trinity) If you believe that, you’re a Christian… Also there are weird aspects of Christianity, but there are weird groups in every religion…(LOOKING AT YOU ISIS) One small part of the whole, shouldn’t reflect the outwards appearance of the big picture.-Christian Dude
Yikes. Well Islam is a bit more specific about what it takes to be a Muslim, and thankfully so, or else the crazies in the Nation of Islam would be one of us. Unlike Christianity, we can actually call out ISIS and racist jerks like the NoI for what they really are- brutal ideologies that serve to perpretate some idiotic message.- Muslim Dude
I mean we do call out the crazy white people that bomb abortion clinics in the name of Jesus….-Christian Dude
2 Days and One Atheistic Apocalypse Later
You know what. Now that I’ve seen the horrors of secularism and all first-hand, I think us theists need to stick together instead of arguing over how infidel-y you infidels are. -Muslim Dude
I totally agre- wait… HEY-Christian Dude
(Don’t worry, we don’t have anything against atheists, Christians, or Muslims, or even Mormons (EXCEPT FOR MITT ROMNEY-Christian Guy) (we just don’t like christians) and we know we had a huge “fight” up there, but in truth, all religions can live in peace as long as we’re not jerks to each other.-Muslim Dude
But srsly.. Fork you FSM-Christian Dude
anyways…
Asian Christianity
So it started with the rise of Islam, in the Arabic Areas… They basically crushed any Christian Communities, to where they basically didn’t exist anymore.. Muslims went as far as to replace a demolished Christian Cathedral with a Mosque..(The Grand Mosque of Sana’a ** - Muslim Dude)(Get off your high horse…. Or camel…-Christian Dude)
Anyways…
Other communities began to feel impacts of the Islamic Empire. Expanding Muslim Forces soon took control of Jerusalem and eventually constructed some Muslim Shrines (Man you guys really enjoy building stuff - Christian Dude)(We like to actually contribute to societies, unlike our wonderful religious neighbors-Muslim Dude)(SHOTS FIRED- Hindu Dude)(FOUR WORDS CHRIST THE REDEEMER STATUE-Christian Dude) So they also built a few shrines on a few important areas for the Jews, the Christians and eventually Islam. (This was built under the Umayyad Caliphate and showed how they brought in aspects from different religions, but maintained their “victorious arrival”. A large percentage of Christian Leaders from Syria, Jerusalem, and Armenia, payed a tribute tax, to keep following their religion.
Occasionally, the Muslim leaders may not have lived up to their promise, and we would see the Christians being persecuted, with churches destroyed and fields burnt, but luckily, that didn’t happen as often. At the same time, especially in places like Syria, we see a wave of church-building and good stuff for Christians. Basically, Christians were supposed to be safe, and generally were, but yeah, there were ugly screw-ups which can’t be excused.
Now we get to the ASIAN part srsly Robert, get your ideas in order Sheesh
So a Christian Church took root in China, with the help of the Tang Rulers. This was spread in 635 with the help of a Persian Missionary. They added their Buddhist and Daoist elements to it, but it was mostly untouched…. While China eventually started the persecution of religion, the brief conquest of the mongols, gave a chance for Christian Renewal because of the religious freedom given by the Mongols.
African Christianity
Similar to the churches of the Middle east, The churches of Christianity found themselves declining, to again.. Islam. This occurred across coastal North Africa.
However… In Egypt, Christianity only grew. Christianity became the majority around 640.
Unfortunately with the arrival of the Crusaders…(White people messing up again) the government in Egypt kinda started to hate the christians, and forcibly removed them.
BUT WAIT THERE’S MORE
So while this removal was taking place, a new christian uprising was taking place in the Nubian Government. Translation of Sacred Text was taking place etc. Sadly, Islamic push, slowly took them out of existence.
But now we move on to Ethiopia.
Ethiopia was kind of an exception where they basically kept Christianity. There are actually numerous encounters in which they meet with numerous characters in the bible such as Solomon etc. (Some Christians may remember the story of how Philip helped saved the Ethiopian Eunuch.)
Okay let’s avoid making jokes about how Muslims and Christians supposedly hate each other. We didn't bash Christians in Chapter 9, but we’re only like 2 pages into this chapter and it's already tiring.-Muslim Dude
Don’t you mean infidels?-Hindu Dude
No, I meant your mom.- Muslim Dude
OOH SAVAGE- Christian Dude, Chinese Dude, Russian Dude, Arab Dude, Pakistani Dude, White Dude, Spain Dude, Vietnamese Dude, Peruvian Dude, South American Dudette and Indian Dude
You know you got rekt when all of the whap.tk Moderators collectively say so.
A moment that shall go down in history forever alongside the greats- Christian Dude
Byzantine Christendom
So the reduction of the Christian faith in Asia and Africa, left Europe and Anatolia to be the centers of the Christian Faith. So as Byzantium was an “expansion” of the Roman empire, a emperor by the name of Constantinople, basically made it so that Christianity would spread throughout the empire. This area was placed in a very advantageable spot, as it had access to the black sea, and many trade routes.
Byzantium wasn’t as big as greek, but the government was built strong.
By 1453, the Byzantine government was conquered by the Turkish Ottomans also known as the Sword of Islam. Now in Byzantine, religion was not separated from state, thus, the emperor made important decisions concerning the religion. Orthodox Christianity had a pretty big influence on Byzantine life. First of all it made the fact that the emperor was an actual ruler legit, and it also provided a cultural identity for the empire’s subjects.
You can read more about Church Divergence if you want, Pg 472, but I don’t think it’s going to be on the quiz…
Relationships with the world: The byzantine empire still continued the struggle with the persian empire. And… For any Percy Jackson fans, the Byzantine Empire was actually the empire that created the innovation of GREEK FIRE. So… take that muslims… Economically the Byzantine empire was a big trade factor in Eurasia, with many links to the eastern part of Eurasia.
Question: What Roman Emperor basically jump-started the Byzantine Empire? ________
The Conversion of Russia
Meanwhile in Russia….
The conversion of Russia was one of the most significant expansions of the Orthodox Church. Religion reflected Russia’s cultural Diversity…. So the leaders of the area of Rus (Modern Day Russia, I wonder where they got the name from..) wanted to unify their people, so they looked for different religions to unify them with. According to ancient chronicles they looked at multiple religions, first Judaism, Islam, Roman Catholicism, before deciding on Eastern Orthodoxy(Byzantium)
Western Christendom: Rebuilding In The Wake of Roman Collapse
So the western part of the European Christian World didn’t get that much hype.(Or it wasn’t lit in today's slang - Muslim Dude) It was pretty far from all the major trade routes, and it didn’t really gain much importance until the Eastern and Western Hemispheres joined together.
Political Life in Western Europe
So Odoacer overthrew the last Roman Emperor in the west. This event has come to symbolize a major turning point, because it showed how the Roman Civilization and Influence has vanished. You can read more about how the decline of Rome affected other civilizations on Page 477… (Basically the other civilizations in the area became the dominant culture in the region) But you know how I said the Roman Influence vanished? Well… Not exactly… Germanic Rulers embraced roman law and frankly (see what I did there?) some soldiers even said they were more roman, than frank (They were Germanic Mercenaries)
Society and the Church
Society in these new kingdoms were feudalism. (The peasants and landowners) They got rich off that….
Accelerating Change in the West
So we’re getting into the middle ages now. Coupled with the Feudalism up there^^
They started cultivating, draining marshes, cutting down trees etc.
They also started long distance trade, with the help of the peasants.
Women started to produce goods for the trade routes, unfortunately men started to dominate the women’s work, and they controlled them. All you need to know is that life sucked a bit for the women of that time period.
Europe Outward Bound: The Crusading Tradition
Now we go to the shameful part of christian history. So this was a period of Europe expansiveness, and one of the biggest occurrences of this is the Crusades. Basically, holy wars that began in 1905. Crusades were wars taken at God’s command and authorized by the Pope. The most famous crusades of that time was aimed at Jerusalem, specifically to take back Jerusalem from Islamic Rule. They killed a lot of people… A Lot. One exaggerated report states that they littered the streets with corpses and blood ankle deep, all the way to the tombs of Jesus Christ. So you know that Christian School across from us? You probably don’t want to be called the Crusaders... Surprisingly, the crusades didn’t really have that much of a long term impact...
Catching Up
So as Europe itself wasn’t as developed as the eastern world. Europe’s cities were smaller, their political authorities weaker, and their technology was outdated. None the less, Europeans were glad to learn from what they could. They started engaging in trade with the other countries. You can go to page 490 to see a chart with all of the stuff they “borrowed” from other nations. They borrowed technology, agriculture techniques, and even war techniques. All in all, it’s not the first time white people stole stuff from people… JKJKJK
Pluralism Explained: Hindu Dude - so I don’t want to do this and the Christian dude is making me do it. (It’s cause I love you - Christian Dude) (I thought homosexuality was against your religion - Muslim Dude)(Its against Muslim’s religion too… Besides that’s only Kim Davis.-Christian Dude)
So Europe basically broke into a lot of different Countries… This shaped the new emerging west in many ways… It gave rise to many wars, enhanced the role and status of military men, and drove the “gunpowder revolution.” It also increased technological production. Different states were able to communicate economically, and intellectually. Rulers towards the east generally were weaker and had to deal with competing powers. Feudalism is when nobles, and other high-ranking officials controlled peasants and maintained a degree of individuality. Feudalism, was kind of the first step for Capitalism. Yeah...
Reason and Faith
This new emerging European civilization, had a intellectual tension, over faith and human reason. Christianity itself developed with greek rationalism, and early Christian thinkers tried to separate Christian teachings, from the teachings of Plato and my boi Aristotle. Basically that’s it… There’s a portion where a guy calls his squad fools, and that's pretty interesting Page 494 but that’s pretty much what you need.
So yeah, that’s our study guide! sry if it was late...
Right..., so the Muslim Dude won’t one up me.
